In the 1980s, Breitling created a durable yet stylish chronograph for the Frecce Tricolori jet team. To protect the crystal when pilots opened their canopies, Breitling recessed it and added raised “rider tabs” at the 15-minute marks. This became the basis for the 1984 Chronomat, whose signatures endure today: rider tabs, an “onion” crown, and the Rouleaux bracelet.
